해설문

국문

귀래정은 1755년(영조 31)에 천서가숙(川西家塾)으로 건립한 정자이다. 가숙은 한 집안이나 일가에서 경영하던 글방을 말한다.

귀래정 건물은 육각형의 평면에 앞쪽은 마루, 뒷쪽은 온돌방과 출입공간으로 꾸민 독특한 구성을 하고 있다. 온돌방과 누마루가 육각형 안에 짜임새 있게 배치되었고 자투리 공간을 활용하는 아이디어가 돋보이는 정자이다. 평면은 육각이면서 지붕은 팔작지붕에서는 독특한 목구조 결구방식을 보여준다. 또 건물 주변은 연지가 감싸고 있어 ㄴ 자형 연못과 정자건물로 구성된 조경도 흔치 않은 귀래정의 특징이라 할 수 있다.

그밖에도 원형과 방형의 기둥이 조화롭게 사용된 점, 마루의 바닥높이에 차이를 두어 외부공간과 자연스럽게 연결시킨 수법 등 다양한 부분에서 전통건축의 구조기법을 보여주는 중요한 자료이다.

영문 해설 내용

귀래정은 1755년 여주이씨 지헌공파 문중에서 후손들을 가르치기 위한 글방으로 지은 정자이다. 귀래정이 있는 천서마을은 여주이씨의 집성촌이다.

이 정자는 원래 육각형의 모양이 마치 꽃 모양과 같다 하여 ‘육화정’으로 불렸다. 1938년, 이 가문의 선조인 이철명(1477-1523, 호:지헌)이 사화로 조정이 어지러워지자 벼슬에서 물러나 귀향한 것을 기리기 위해 ‘귀래정’으로 이름을 바꾸었다. 귀래정이라는 이름은 '벼슬을 버리고 집으로 돌아온다.'라는 뜻을 담고 있다.

정자는 앞쪽의 대청과 뒤쪽의 온돌방 2개로 구성되어 있다. 사각형의 방을 만들면서 생긴 자투리 공간에는 벽장을 설치해서 공간을 최대한 활용하였다. 독특한 구조의 정자와 정자 앞에 조성된 연못이 함께 조화로운 경관을 보여준다.
