해설문

국문

화문면석은 주로 사찰 건물의 기단 바깥 면을 장식하는 건축 재료인 면석面石*에 꽃무늬를 새긴 것이다. 반룡사에 있는, 꽃무늬가 새겨진 면석은 17세기 중엽 반룡사의 중심이 되는 건물의 기단에 사용되었을 것이라고 본다. 그런데 우리나라에서 화문면석은 통도사 대웅전(국보 제290호)과 범어사 대웅전(보물 제434호) 등 격이 높은 불전佛殿**을 지을 때 사용된 정도이다. 이로 보아 반룡사도 사찰로서 지위가 상당히 높았다는 것을 알 수 있다.

반룡사의 화문면석은 조선 후기 영남 지역의 건축 특징을 파악할 수 있는 귀중한 자료이다.
