거제 학동 진석중 가옥은 해방이후인 1947년에 건축된 지방상류층 살림집으로데, 동서의 긴 사다리꼴 대지에 안채(본채), 별채(건너채), 창고(광채), 대문 등이 ‘튼ㅁ’자형을 이루고 있다.
안채의 마루 상부 종도리 밑면에 남아있는 상량문<檀紀四千二百八十年丁亥三月十五日甲申巳時上樑> 내용을 통해 1947년에 건립된 가옥임을 알 수 있다.
안채의 벽장과 창호, 별채의 욕실과 화장실 등은 일식으로 지어졌으며, 별채는 일반적인 ‘ㅡ’자형 평면의 뒤쪽에 실내 화장실과 욕실 및 복도를 배치했다. 안채와 별채의 합리적이고 기능적인 공간구성은 근대적 성격을 잘 반영하고 있는 것으로 평가되고 있다.
진석중 가옥은 1940년대 말 경남 남해안 도서지방 상류층의 주거 특징과 변화상을 살펴 볼 수 있는 근대기 주택이라는 점에서 보존 가치가 높은 문화재로 인정받고 있다. 이 집을 건축한 진석중(1912~1960)은 수산업자 출신의 정치인으로 제4대 국회의원 등을 역임했다.
