해설문
국문
통제영학당은 조선 고종 때인 1893년에 설치한 우리나라 최초의 근대식 해군사관학교이다. 고종은 서양 함선인 이양선(異樣船)의 출몰이 잦아지자 해양 방어의 일환으로 군함을 건조하고 구입하려 했다. 그러나 인재와 기술의 부족, 재정 궁핍, 청나라와 일본의 방해 등으로 효과를 거두지 못하자 그에 필요한 인재를 양성하기 위하여 통제영학당을 세웠다. 이곳에서는 영국 장교들이 교관으로 부임하여 교육하였으나 동학농민전쟁과 청일전쟁 등의 영향으로 교육이 순조롭게 이루어지지 못했다. 그 후 1896년 5월 영국군 교관들이 귀국하자 폐교되었으며 학교 건물은 소실되고 현재는 터만 남아 있다.
