King Huijong was the first son of King Sinjong (r. 1197-1204). He ruled during the period when the military, led by Choe Chung-heon (1149-1219), had strong control over the kingdom and ruled as dictators. Since his time as crown prince, Huijong repeatedly rebelled against Choe and his family. In 1211, seven years after he became king, he attempted to assassinate Choe but was unsuccessful. He was forced to abdicate and was exiled to Gyodongdo Island. In 1237, he died on Yongyudo Island.

This tomb was built during the period between 1232 and 1270 when the Goryeo capital had been temporarily moved from Gaeseong (in today's North Korea) to Ganghwado Island during the Mongol invasions. It is one of five Goryeo royal tombs located in today's South Korea and is therefore a valuable resource in studying Goryeo royal burial practices.

This tomb is a stone chamber tomb. It is said that during the Joseon period (1392-1910), the tomb was located in the 1660s by local magistrate Jo Bok-yang (1609-1671) and rebuilt. Over time, the original stone structures around the tomb became damaged, and the tomb mound itself had also collapsed. It was repaired in 1974 and excavated in 2002.  Various artifacts were excavated from the tomb, including an inlaid celadon saucer.
