해설문

국문

강화 볼음도 은행나무는 언덕 위에서 마을을 지키는 나무의 역할을 하고 있는 높이 25m 이상의 노거수이다. 800여 년 전 황해남도 연안군에 있는 부부나무 중 홍수로 떠내려 온 수나무를 건져 이곳에 심었다는 이야기가 전해 내려오고 있다.

조선 천연기념물 165호로 지정된 「북한 연안은행나무」는 황해도 연안군 호남리 호남중학교 뒷마당에서 자라고 있으며 높이 19m 이상으로 알려져 있다.

강화 볼음도 은행나무의 가지를 태우면 재앙을 내린다는 전설이 전해지고 있으며, 1950년대까지 마을의 평안과 풍어를 비는 풍어제를 지냈다고 한다.

오랜 세월동안 조상들의 관심과 보살핌 가운데 살아온 나무로 민속적·생물학적 자료로서의 가치가 높아 천연기념물로 지정·보호하고 있다.

영문 해설 내용

은행나무는 약 2억 7천만 년 전부터 지구에 살기 시작했으며, ‘살아있는 화석’이라 불린다. 넓은 그늘을 만들어서 마을 입구의 정자나무나 가로수로 많이 심는다. 가을이면 부채 모양의 나뭇잎이 노란색으로 물든다.

볼음도의 은행나무는 높이가 25m 가량 된다. 원래 볼음도 북쪽에 위치한 북한 연안군에 있었는데, 800여 년 전 홍수로 떠내려와 이곳에 다시 심었다고 한다. 현재 북한의 조선 천연기념물 165호로 지정된 19m 높이의 나무와 부부나무였던 것으로 여겨진다.

또다른 전설에 의하면 이 나무의 가지를 태우면 재앙이 내린다고 한다. 1950년대까지 이 나무를 마을의 수호신으로 여기고, 마을의 안녕과 풍요를 비는 제사를 지냈다고 한다.
