Deokjinjin Fort, Ganghwa

A fort, called jin in Korean, was a military base where the command of a local army was stationed. The area around Ganghwado Island has been a strategic military defense location for over a millennia, as it is located at the mouth of two rivers which pass by the former capitals of the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1910) dynasties.

This fort was built in 1658. It is one of 12 forts established on Ganghwado at that time.

This fort was the site of fierce battles during the Western Disturbances of 1866 and 1871, in which French and American troops, respectively, attacked Korea.

It was heavily destroyed at the time, and only the main gate remained intact. In 1977, the fortress walls and the outpost were repaired, and the pavilion atop the main gate, called Gongjoru Pavilion, was rebuilt.
