In 1212, she married King Gangjong, who was her cousin, and became known as Princess Yeondeok. After her death, she was posthumously given the title of Queen Mother Wondeok.

해설문

국문

강화 곤릉은 고종의 어머니이며 강종의 비인 원덕태후미상-1239의 능이다. 1231년 고려는 몽골의 침입을 받고 강화도로 천도하였다. 원덕태후는 이 시기에 사망하여 강화도에 능을 만든 것으로 추정된다.

강화 곤릉은 지하에 구멍을 파고 돌을 이용하여 방을 만든 후 입구를 만든 돌방무덤이다. 강화 곤릉 주변의 석조물이 없어지고 봉분 또한 무너져 내린 것을 1974년에 보수하고, 2004년 국립문화재연구소에서 발굴조사 한 후 현재의 모습으로 재정비되었다.

남한에 단 2기밖에 남아 있지 않은 고려시대 왕비 능으로 남북분단 현실에서 고려 왕실의 묘지를 직접 보고 연구할 수 있는 문화유산으로 가치가 크다.
