해설문

국문

강진 병영면 한골목길 옛 담장은 전체적으로 돌과 흙을 번갈아 쌓은 토석담이다. 아래쪽은 비교적 큰 화강석을 쌓고, 중간부터는 어른 주먹 크기 정도의 작은 돌을 사용하여 쌓았으며, 담 위에는 기와로 지붕을 얹었다. 담장 역할을 하는 부속채도 담장과 같은 높이와 방식으로 쌓아 담장과 조화를 잘 이루고 있다. 담장의 높이는 2m 정도로 높은 편이다. 이는 병영 마을이라는 특성과 관련이 있다. 마을 안길이 직선형으로 되어 있어 담장이 한층 정연해 보인다.

한골목 옛 담장의 담 쌓기 방식은 ‘빗살무늬 방식’인데 이 방식은 타 지방과 다른 독특한 방식이다. 빗살무늬 방식은 아래쪽은 큰 화강석으로 쌓고, 중간 위쪽부터는 얇은 돌을 약 15° 정도 눕혀서 촘촘하게 쌓으며, 다음 층에는 다시 엇갈려 쌓는 방식이다. 이곳에서는 이 방식을 '하멜식 담 쌓기’라고 부른다. 네덜란드 사람인 하멜 일행이 1656년부터 1663년까지 7년간 이 곳에 머무를 때에 이들에게서 배운 것으로 전해온다.

영문 해설 내용

한골목 옛 담장은 성남리에서 지로리까지 약 1.5km의 골목길을 따라 둘러져 있다. ‘한골목’은 ‘크고 긴 담장이 있는 골목’이라는 뜻이다.

담장은 돌과 흙을 번갈아 쌓아 만들었다. 담장의 아래쪽은 비교적 큰 화강석으로 쌓고, 중간부터는 납작한 돌을 옆으로 15° 정도 기울여 촘촘하게 쌓은 뒤 다음 층에는 다시 반대 방향으로 엇갈려 쌓았다. 담 위에는 기와로 지붕을 얹었다. 이는 다른 지역에서는 볼 수 없는 독특한 축조 방식으로, 이 지역에서는 이러한 방식을 ‘하멜식 담 쌓기’라고 부른다.

헨드릭 하멜(1630-1692)은 네덜란드 선원으로 1653년 폭풍을 만나 조선에 표착하게 되었고, 이후 1656년부터 1663년까지 강진 지역에 억류되었다. 그가 이곳에 머무를 때 배운 방식이라고 한다.

담장의 높이는 2m 정도로 높은 편이다. 이 인근에는 조선시대의 병영이 있었는데, 병사들이 말을 타고 다녔기 때문에 집안이 보이지 않게 하기 위해 담장을 높이 쌓았던 것으로 추정된다.
