The history of this temple is largely unknown. According to a 15th-century document, it was founded by the monk Hyesim (State Preceptor Jingak, 1178-1234) during the Goryeo period (918-1392). However, excavations of the site in the 2010s revealed not only building sites, roof tile shards, and celadon shards from the Goryeo period, but also roof tiles from the Baekje period (18 BCE-660 CE), suggesting that the temple was founded in the Baekje period and expanded in the Goryeo period.

The site consists of, from front to back, the remains of a central gate, a pair of stone pagodas, a main worship hall, and a lecture hall. To each side of the courtyard between the main worship hall and the lecture hall is a corridor hall. This overall layout is typical of Buddhist temples built in the Unified Silla period (668-935), yet the buildings and extant east pagoda (Treasure No. 298) date to the Goryeo period, making the site of particular academic value.

Wollamsa Temple Site

This is the former site of a Buddhist temple called Wollamsa, meaning "Temple to the South of Wolchulsan Mountain."

The history of this temple is largely unknown. According to a 15th-century document, it was founded by the monk Hyesim (State Preceptor Jingak, 1178-1234) during the Goryeo period (918-1392).
