From 1656 to 1663, he was detained in the Gangjin area and recorded about old ginkgo trees, which are presumed to be these ones.

Then he became ill and no doctors could figure out what caused his illness. One day, an old man came to the commander and said that he will get well if he perform a ritual before the trees and put his pillow back to the branches. The commander followed this advice and indeed got well. The villagers still regard these ginkgo threes sacred. They perform a ritual in every second lunar month wishing comforts and fruitful harvests in the village.

해설문

국문

은행나무는 우리나라, 일본, 중국 등지에 분포하는데 우리나라에는 중국에서 유교와 불교가 전해질 때에 같이 들어온 것으로 전하고 있다. 성동리 은행나무는 높이가 30m, 가슴둘레 높이가 6.75m이며 나무의 모양이 아름답다. 수령은 800년쯤으로 추정한다.

이곳 일대는 고려 시대에 도강현(道康縣)의 행정 중심지가 있던 곳이며 조선 태종 17년(1417)에 전라 병마절도사 영을 설치한 곳이다. 1656년부터 1663년까지 이 병영에 머물렀던 하멜이 쓴 표류기*에도 은행나무와 관련한 이야기를 기록하고 있다. 전라 병마절도사로 부임한 관리가 은행나무로 만든 목침을 베고 잠을 잔 뒤에 병이 났는데, 어느 의원도 병의 원인을 알아내지 못하였고, 한 노인이 “은행나무에 제사를 지내고 베개를 나무에 붙여 주면 병이 나으리라”고 한 말을 따라 그대로 하였더니 병이 나았다는 전설이 있다. 이후로 마을에서는 매년 음력 2월 15일 자정 무렵에 은행나무에 마을의 평안과 풍년을 기원하는 제사를 지내고 있다.

이 은행나무는 오랜 세월동안 주민들의 관심과 보살핌 가운데 살아온 나무이고, 생물학적 보존 가치도 크고, 역사적·문화적 자료로서 가치가 높다.

영문 해설 내용

은행나무는 약 2억 7천만 년 전부터 지구에 살기 시작했으며, ‘살아있는 화석’이라 불린다. 한국, 중국, 일본 등에 분포하고 있다. 넓은 그늘을 만들어서 마을 입구의 정자나무나 가로수로 많이 심는다. 가을이면 부채 모양의 나뭇잎이 노란색으로 물든다.

성동리의 은행나무는 나이가 800년 이상 되었을 것으로 추정된다.

이 나무는 조선을 서양에 처음으로 알린 책인 『하멜표류기』에도 등장한다. 네덜란드 선원이었던 헨드릭 하멜(1630-1692)은 1653년 폭풍을 만나 조선에 표착하게 되었고, 이후 1656년부터 1663년까지 강진 지역에 억류되었다. 그는 이곳에서 오래된 은행나무를 보았다고 기술하고 있는데, 바로 이 나무였을 것으로 추정한다.
