Stone Standing Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of Deokjusa Temple, Jecheon

This stone sculpture is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period (918-1392). The medicine bowl in the left hand indicates that it is a statue of Bhaisajyaguru, or the Medicine Buddha, who is believed to possess the power to heal illness and physical defects.

The statue was originally found buried at the site of Jeonggeumsa Temple. It is in nearly perfect condition, except for the lower part which was slightly damaged after having been buried in the ground for a long time. The statue was moved here from its original location due to the construction of Chungju Dam.

The buddha’s head was made disproportionally large compared to the body and the folds on his clothes are carved softly. The pedestal supporting the statue was added recently.
