Go Gwangsun, originally from Damyang Jeollanam-do Province, is the descendant of Go Gyeong-myeong (1533-1592) who raised a civilian army in Jeolla-do Province and fought the Japanese invaders. After the Japan–Korea Treaty of 1905 was signed under duress, he raised civilian armies in the area of Jeolla-do Province. In 1907 he used Yeongoksa Temple, which was situated in a deep valley, as a base for his armies where he trained the soldiers and as a place of resistance. However, the Japanese military and police launched a large-scale military operation to suppress the civilian armies. Yeongoksa Temple was the main target of gunfire leading to Go Gwangsun dying in battle and the temple to be burned to the ground.

After this events, the residents of Gurye erected a stele inside the temple to commend Go Gyeong-myeong[the original text says Go Gyeong-myeong but I think it should be Go Gwangsun] and in 1962 he was posthumously honored with the Order of Merit for National Foundation. In 2007, as a centenary celebration dedicated to his sacrifice for the country the current stele that is in the Gurye-gun county was erected.

When Go Gwangsun stayed in the Yeongoksa Temple he raised a korean flag that he embroidered with a message saying ‘Burwonbok(不遠復, Restoration is soon)’ and this flag was registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage (National Registered Cultural Heritage no. 384).
