This traditional Korean house was used as the residence of Ryu Ji-yeong (1828-1896, pen name: Jisan). He passed the state examination in 1857 and served as a royal secretary, censor-general, and magistrate of Andong.
In 1841, when he moved out of his older brother’s house, Yeomhaengdang, to set up a branch family, he inherited this house and named it Jonyangdang, literally meaning “a house of preservation and nourishment.” This comes from Mencius’ saying: “To preserve one’s mental constitution, and nourish one’s nature, is the way to serve Heaven.”
