해설문

기존 국문

이 정자는 회당悔堂 류세철柳世哲1627~1681이 후학을 양성하며 만년을 보내기 위해 1662년에 건립한 것이다. 정자가 서있는 언덕은 마치 ‘봉황새가 날아오르는 형국’을 하고 있어 상봉대翔鳳臺라고 하며, 류성룡은 이곳을 마을의 서쪽 언덕이라는 의미로 서애西厓라고 이름 짓고 자신의 호號로 삼았다. 건물의 구조와 양식은 두드러지지 않으나, 상봉정 일대의 그윽한 풍광은 ‘하회10경’에 묘사될 정도로 자연을 벗 삼아 유유자적하기에 더할 나위 없는 것으로 평가된다.

수정 국문

상봉정은 류세철(柳世哲, 1627~1681)이 1670년에 건립한 정자이다. 관직에서 물러나 노년을 보내며 후학을 양성하기 위해 지었다고 한다.

류세철은 조선 후기의 문신으로 공조좌랑, 군위현감 등을 역임했다. 관직에 있을 때도 지역에서 학문을 강의하며 후진 교육에 힘썼다.

정자는 가운데 마루를 중심으로 양쪽에 방을 두었다. 상봉정에서 바라보는 하회의 모습과 정자 인근의 풍경은 ‘하회10경’에 묘사될 정도로 아름답다.

‘상봉정’이 있는 언덕 ‘상봉대’는 마치 ‘봉황새가 날아오르는 듯한 모습’이라는 뜻을 담고 있다. 조선 중기의 이름 높은 재상이었던 류성룡(柳成龍, 1542~1607)은 이곳을 마을의 서쪽 언덕이라는 의미로 ‘서애’라고 이름 짓고 자신의 호로 삼았다.
