'''Firework Boat Festival'''

 +
Firework festivals (''julbul nori'', literally “rope fire game”) are an event typically held on the Buddha’s Birthday in April in which charcoal powder is placed in small pouches, hung on a rope stretched over a river, and then lit ablaze. As mentioned in a poem by scholar and Hahoe Village native Ryu Seong-ryong (1542-1607), such a festival was held in annually in Hahoe Village on the 16th day of the 7th lunar month in the evening under the full moon.

 +
During the festival, ropes were hung from Buyongdae Cliff to the Pinewoods of Mansongjeong Pavilion across the Nakdonggang River. Many mulberry paper pouches filled with charcoal powder made from mulberry wood were hung from the rope and lit on fire. As the burning embers fall from the pouch, it creates a shower of fireworks in all directions. In Korean, the word for fireworks can be literally translated as “fire flower,” and so another name for the festival is ''nakhwa nori'', meaning “falling flower game.” In addition to the falling embers, there are other fire-related activities during the festival. Heaps of pine branches are lit on fire and thrown off Buyongdae Cliff, and egg shells coated with oil are lit on fire and put in the water to float around. During the festival, literati riding on boats would drink alcohol, write poetry, sing songs, and enjoy music.

Hahoe Village’s firework boat festival had been passed down for many generations as an important tradition but was banned during the Japanese colonial period (1910-1945). After liberation in 1945, the festival was held informally a few times. These days, it is held annually during the Andong International Mask Dance Festival.
