The exact construction period of this fortress is unknown, and there are several assumptions about its history and purpose. It is said that the fortress was built during the Korean Three Kingdoms period (57 BCE-668 CE) to prevent thieves, or it was established by Im Pal-geup, the founder of the Pyeongtaek Im Clan who came to this area in the 9th century. Another theory says the fortress was built to defend the Japanese invaders during the Goryeo period (918-1392) or during the Japanese invasions in 1592-1598.
