해설문

국문

우리나라 향교에 기본으로 있는 은행나무는 낙엽 교목으로 병충해와 공해에 강하고 단풍잎이 아름다워 정자나무와 가로수로 많이 심는다.

향교에 은행나무를 심는 까닭은 공자가 제자를 가르쳤던 곳이 행단(杏壇)이라 하여 은행나무와 관련되기 때문이고, 은행나무의 특성상 수명이 길고 열매가 많이 열리며 벌레가 없기 때문에 교육이 오래 이어지고, 학문의 결실이 풍성하고, 불의에 물들지 말라는 의미도 담겨 있다.

은행나무는 높이 25m, 둘레 8.2m의 암나무로 보기 드물게 큰 편에 속한다. 가지의 폭은 동서 20.1m, 남북 17.5m에 이른다. 1658년(효종 9) 향교를 동쪽 농암등(籠巖嶝)에서 지금의 자리로 옮겨 지을 때 심은 것으로 추정되며, 향교와 더불어 360년의 세월을 지내오고 있다.

은행나무는 약 2억 7천만 년 전부터 지구에 살기 시작했으며, ‘살아있는 화석’이라 불린다. 넓은 그늘을 만들어서 마을 입구의 정자나무나 가로수로 많이 심는다. 가을이면 부채 모양의 나뭇잎이 노란색으로 물든다.

낙안향교 명륜당 옆에서 자라고 있는 이 은행나무는 향교가 이 지역에 옮겨 지어진 1658년에 심어진 것으로 추정된다. 한국의 향교에는 은행나무를 심는 경우가 많은데, 공자가 은행나무 아래에서 제자를 가르쳤다고 여기기 때문이다. 또한 은행나무의 특성상 수명이 길고 열매가 많이 열리며 벌레가 없기 때문에, 교육이 오래 이어지고 학문의 결실이 풍성하며 불의에 물들지 말라는 의미도 담겨 있다.
