국문

진해역은 1926년 11월 11일 진해선 개통과 함께 사용된 역이다. 해군의 도시 진해에서 국방에 필요한 물류가 오가던 길목에 위치하여 1961년에는 해병대 전용선이 개통되는 등 국방과 관련된 다양하고 중요한 역할을 담당했다. 2005년 9월 14일 진해역은 국가등록 문화유산으로 지정되었다. 이후에도 운영을 이어 갔으나 이용객이 줄어들면서 2015년 2월 1일 정기 여객 운행이 중단되었다.

진해역 건물은 해안 지역의 철도 역사(驛舍)답게 개방적이고 독특한 형태를 띠고 있다. 특히 유럽의 전통 건축에서 다락방을 낼 때 자주 사용하는 지붕창이 있어 전원의 목가적인 분위기를 느끼게 한다. 건물 전체가 낮게 수평선을 이루며 작고 아담하여 전형적인 간이 역사의 형식과 규모를 잘 반영하고 있다. 또한 도심 축의 기점을 이루며 근대 도시 계획을 보여 주는 상징적인 장소 가운데 하나이다.

현재 진해역과 더불어 주변에 있는 진해 우체국, 구 태백 여인숙, 화천동 근대 상가주택 등 10곳의 문화유산은 ‘진해 근대 역사문화공간’으로 지정되어 근대 이후 우리나라의 역사 문화적 가치를 잘 보여주고 있다.

Jinhae Station

Jinhae Station was established in November 1926 with the opening of the Jinhae Railroad Line. Located at a strategic point for transporting military supplies to and from the Jinhae Naval Base, it played various important defense-related roles, including the opening of a dedicated Marine Corps line in 1961. Jinhae Station was listed as a National Registered Cultural Heritage in 2005. Although operations continued afterward, declining ridership led to the suspension of regular passenger service on February 1, 2015.

The station building features an open and distinctive design. Notably, it includes dormer windows commonly used in traditional European architecture for attic spaces, creating a pastoral, countryside atmosphere. The entire building forms a low horizontal silhouette and is small and compact, reflecting the typical form and scale of a modest rural station. It also serves as the starting point of the city’s urban axis and stands as one of the symbolic sites representing modern urban planning.

Along with Jinhae Station, ten cultural heritage sites—including Jinhae Post Office, the former Taebaek Inn, and modern mixed-use buildings—have been collectively registered as a National Registered Cultural Heritage as part of the Jinhae Modern History and Culture District, effectively illustrating the history and culture of the Jinhae area in the 20th century.
