대한성공회는 1890년 영국인 고요한(Charles John Corfe) 초대 주교에 의해 한국에 전파되었다. 수원은 서울·인천·강화에 이은 4번째 개척한 선교지로, 1904년 선교를 시작한 이래 1905년 10월 영국인 부재열(George Alfred Bridle) 신부가 부임하면서 1906년 매교동에서 현재 자리로 옮겼고 1908년 성스테반 성당을 신축하였다. 수원교회는 특히 ‘진명학교’와 ‘진명유치원’. ‘성피득(베드로)보육원’을 운영하며 교육을 통한 선교활동으로 지역사회에 공헌한 바가 컸는데, 서양식 운동회가 개최되고 수원에서 최초로 축구가 시작되기도 하였다. 독립운동가 이현경·이선경은 진명학교 출신이며, 김노적·박선태 또한 교인으로 비밀결사 구국민단을 결성하여 수원교회에서 발기인 대회를 열고 항일운동을 벌이기도 했다. 근대시기 수원에 끼친 영향이 큰 수원교회의 현재 성당은 1982년 신축한 건물이다.

Suwon Anglican Church

Suwon Anglican Church was established as a missionary site in 1904 by Charles John Corfe (also known as Go Yo-han) appointed as a Bishop of the Anglican Church in Korea in 1890*. It was the fourth mission he set up after Seoul, Incheon, and Ganghwa. Originally built in the Maekgyo-dong area, the first church was moved to the current location in 1906 by the priest George Alfred Bridle (also known as Bu Jae-yeol) appointed in 1905. St Stephen’s Church was built here in 1908, and built anew in 1982.

Over the years, the church has significantly contributed to the local community through its education-based missionary work by operating Jinmyeon School, Jinmyeon Kindergarten, and St Peter’s Orphanage. The church also established a Western-style sports club and organized the first in Suwon football practices. Among the graduates of Jinmyeong School were the prominent leaders of the Korean independence movement Yi Hyeon-gyeong and Yi Seon-gyeon, while the church itself was the place where the secret society of the anti-Japanese resistance Gugukmindan had its inaugural meeting held by its founders Kim No-jeok and Bak Seon-tae.

• Wikipedia says he was appointed in 1889. It looks like they have credible sources. I assume 1890 might have been the year he arrived in Korea.
