국문
급수탑은 과거 증기기관차에 물을 공급하던 시설이다. 물을 취수원(우물 등)에서 급수탑 상부 물탱크로 끌어올려 저장했다가 낙차를 이용해 증기기관에 보냈다. 증기기관은 물을 끓일 때 발생하는 증기의 압력으로 동력을 얻는데, 이때 증기 발생으로 소모되는 물을 보충하여야만 했다.
충주역 급수탑은 1928년 충북선 청주 ↔ 충주 구간 개통 시 건립되어 1967년 디젤기관차가 등장하기까지 40여 년간 사용되었다. 이 급수탑은 1920년대의 일반적 형식인 철근콘크리트조이며, 상부의 물탱크와 하부의 기계실이 일체화되어 기능적으로 단순하게 구성되었다. 급수탑 하단부에는 아치형 출입구 1개소가 있고, 급배수 철제 배관 일부가 남아 있다.
충북선 철도 구간에 유일하게 남아 있는 이 탑은 충주 지역 근대기의 역사성, 상징성, 지역성을 지니고 있다.

Water Tower at Chungju Station
This water tower was used to supply water to steam trains. Steam engines are powered by the pressure of steam which occurs when water is boiled, and water consumed by steam generation had to be replaced. The steam train was first introduced to Korea in 1899 and played a central role in railway transportation. With the debut of diesel engines in the 1950s, however, its role began to diminish. When the steam train service officially came to an end in 1967, most of the water towers were demolished. The remaining towers are managed as either National Registered Cultural Heritages or Railway Monuments.
Water Tower at Chungju Station was set up in 1928 when the Cheongju- Chungju section of the Chungbuk Railway Line was constructed. In the 1920s, the general layout of water towers was a reinforced concrete structure, the upper part of which consists of a water tank and the lower – of a machine room. At the level ground of the water tower is one arched entrance and iron plumbing pipes partially remain. It is the only remaining water tower at the railway section of today's Chungbuk Railway Line.
