효정사는 이곡, 이색, 이종덕, 이종학, 이종선, 이맹균, 이자, 이개 등 8인의 위패를 모시고 있는 문헌서원의 사우*이다.

효정사는 문헌서원이 ‘문헌’으로 사액**되기 전의 이름이다. 1575년 한산군수로 온 이성중(李誠中)이 기린산 기슭현 기산면 영모리에 목은 이색 묘 아래에 사당을 짓고 문효공 가정 이곡과 문정공 목은 이색을 제향하며 두 분의 시호인 ‘문효’와 ‘문정’의 호를 따서 ‘효정묘(孝靖廟)’라 하였다. 그 후로 20여 년이 지난 1597년 정유재란 때 일본군에 의해 소실되자 1610년(광해군 2)에 명곡 이산보(鳴谷 李山甫)의 사위 충청도관찰사 정엽(鄭曄)과 아들 이경탁(李慶倬) 등이 고향인 한산면 고촌리에 서원을 세웠고, 1612년에 사액**서원이 되었다.

그러나 1871년(고종 8) 흥선대원군의 서원철폐령으로 문헌서원은 문을 닫았으나 1969년에 효정사가 있던 이곳의 이색 묘역 일원에 복원되었고, 2007년~2013년 서원을 재정비하여 지금의 모습을 갖추었다.

영문

Hyojeongsa Shrine

Hyojeongsa Shrine is the main shrine of Munheonseowon Confucian Academy. It enshrines the spirit tablets of eight Confucian scholars of the Hansan Yi Clan, namely Yi Gok (1298-1351), Yi Saek (1328-1396), Yi Jong-deok (1350-1388), Yi Jong-hak (1361-1392), Yi Jong-seon (1368-1438), Yi Maeng-gyun (1371-1440), Yi Gae (1417-1456), and Yi Ja (1480-1533).

This shrine was first established in 1575 by Yi Seong-jung (1539-1593), a local magistrate of Hansan, to commemorate his ancestors Yi Gok and Yi Saek. It was located on the slope of Girinsan Mountain (today’s Yeongmo-ri) in front of Yi Saek’s tomb. The name Hyojeongsa means “Shrine of Filial Piety and Tranquility,” and comes from the posthumous titles of Yi Gok and Yi Saek, which are, respectively, Lord of Culture and Filial Piety (Munhyogong) and Lord of Culture and Tranquility (Munjeonggong).

By 1594, other buildings, including a lecture hall, had been added in the vicinity, thus turning the complex into a Confucian academy. But the academy was destroyed shortly therafter during the Japanese invasions of 1597-1598, and was rebuilt in Gochon-ri Village in 1610. However, the academy was demolished in 1871 when most shrines and Confucian academies were shut down by a nationwide decree. In 1969, the Confucian academy was rebuilt at the current location. The Confucian academy was repaired between 2007 and 2013, with the shrine building also having been newly built at that time.

영문 해설 내용

효정사는 문헌서원의 사당이다. 이곡(1298-1351), 이색(1328-1396), 이종덕(1350-1388), 이종학(1361-1392), 이종선(1368-1438), 이맹균(1371-1440), 이개(1417-1456), 이자(1480-1533) 등 한산이씨 선현 8인의 위패를 모시고 있다.

1575년 한산군수로 부임한 이성중(1539-1593)이 기린산 기슭(지금의 영모리) 이색의 묘 인근에 이곡과 이색을 기리는 사당을 지었다. 사당의 이름은 이곡과 이색의 시호인 ‘문효’와 ‘문정’을 따서 ‘효정묘’라 하였다.

이후 강당을 비롯한 다른 건물들이 들어서면서 1594년 서원의 모습을 갖추었으나, 1597년 정유재란 때 소실되었고 1610년 고촌리로 옮겨 다시 지어졌다. 서원은 1871년 서원철폐령으로 철거되었다가, 1969년 지금의 위치로 옮겨 서원을 다시 지었다. 2007년부터 2013년까지 서원을 정비하였고, 사당 건물도 이때 새로 지었다.
