하마비는 궁궐이나 종묘, 문묘, 서원의 입구에 주로 세워 이 비 앞을 지나갈 때에는 신분의 높고 낮음을 막론하고 누구든지 말에서 내리라는 뜻을 새긴 표석이다. 경의를 표하는 뜻으로 말에서 내려 지나가도록 한 것이다. 이 하마비가 세워진 시기는 분명하지 않으나 서원이 창건되었을 때에 같이 세워진 것으로 추측하고 있다.

Dismounting Post of Oksanseowon Confucian Academy

A dismounting post was placed in front of dignified places and denoted where one should dismount from their horse before entering. It was commonly found in front of the entrances to places such as a palace, Confucian academy, or local Confucian school, where entering the space with propriety was of utmost importance.

This dismounting post of Oksanseowon Confucian Academy is presumed to have been erected when the academy was established in 1572.
