신라 시조 혁거세왕(赫居世王, 재위 기원전 57~기원후 4)의 왕비인 알영(閼英)이 태어났다는 우물이다. 아리영정(娥利英井)이라고도 하는데 석재 3매가 덮고 있어 규모는 알 수 없다.

󰡔삼국사기󰡕와 󰡔삼국유사󰡕에는 ‘사량리(沙梁里) 알영정 가에 계룡(雞龍)이 나타나 오른쪽 옆구리에서 입술이 닭 부리를 닮은 여자아이를 낳았다. 한 노파가 이를 거두어 우물의 이름을 따서 알영이라고 이름 짓고 월성 북쪽에 있는 냇물에 목욕을 시켰더니 부리가 퉁겨져 떨어졌으므로 그 냇물을 발천(撥川)이라 이름 하였다. 자라면서 빼어난 용모와 덕행을 갖추었는데, 왕이 소문을 듣고 왕비로 맞아 들였다. 알영 왕비는 행실이 어질고 보필을 잘하여 당시 사람들은 왕과 왕비를 두 성인(二聖)이라 불렀다고 한다.’라고 기록되어 있다.

전통사회에서 우물은 매우 중요한 공간이었다. 사회 구성원들에게 식수를 공급해줄 뿐만 아니라 물이 곧 생명을 상징하기에 제의(祭儀) 공간이자 정화(淨化) 의식을 거행하던 곳이다. 알영정 터에는 신라시조왕비탄강유지(新羅始祖王妃誕降遺址)라는 비석이 있다.

Aryeongjeong Well

This well is said to be the place where Queen Aryeong (53 BCE-?), the wife of the founding king of the Silla kingdom (57 BCE-935 CE), Bak Hyeokgeose (r. 57 BCE-4 CE), was born.

The legend about Queen Aryeong's birth is recorded in the History of the Three Kingdoms (Samguk sagi) as follows: In the fifth year of King Hyeokgeose's reign, a dragon appeared beside Aryeongjeong Well in Saryang-ri Village. A little girl with lips like a chicken's red beak emerged from the dragon's ribs. A grandmother saw this and considered it a strange sight. She named the girl Aryeong after the well. She took her to the stream to the north of Wolseong Palace to bathe her, and while being washed, her peak fell off. Thus, the stream came to be known as Balcheon, meaning "Stream of Removal." As she grew up, she had outstanding beauty and virtue. As a queen, her conduct was benevolent and she assisted others well, so the people called her and her husband the "Two Sages."

The well is located inside a stone enclosure wall. The well is covered with three stone slabs, and its interior is unknown. Next to the well is a stele. Nearby are the Five Royal Tombs (Historic Site) where her tomb is located, as well as a ritual house named Sundeokjeon for the preparation of veneration rituals for Bak Hyeokgeose.
