해설문
국문
가야산의 정상이 이 연못에 비친다고 해서 영지라 부른다. 가락국 김수로왕의 왕비인 허황후(許黃玉, 미상~188)가 장유화상을 따라 가야산 칠불봉(七佛峯)으로 출가한 일곱 왕자를 그리워하여 가야산을 찾았으나 산에 오를 수 없어 아들들의 그림자라도 보게 해달라고 부처님께 지극한 마음으로 기도하였다. 그러자 정진 중에 왕자들의 모습이 이 연못에 비쳤다고 전한다.
영문
Yeongji Pond
This pond is known as Yeongji, meaning "pond of the shadow," because the peak of the Gayasan Mountain is reflected in the pond.
This name is also related to a legend about Heo Hwang-ok, the queen consort of King Suro, the founder of the Geumgwan Gaya tribal state. After Heo Hwang-ok and King Suro married, she gave birth to 10 sons. Seven of her sons followed her older brother and went to Chilbulbong Peak in Gayasan Mountain where they became Buddhist monks. Missing her sons, she went to Gayasan Mountain, but because she could not climb the mountain, she prayed to the Buddha to allow her to see at least the shadow of her sons. Thus, the shadow of the monk princes was reflected in this pond.
The name Chilbulbong means "peak of the seven buddhas," and refers to these seven sons.
영문 해설 내용
이 연못의 이름은 ‘그림자 연못’이라는 뜻으로, 가야산의 정상이 이 연못에 비친다고 해서 붙여진 이름이다.
이 연못에는 금관가야의 시조인 김수로왕의 왕비 허황옥과 관련한 전설이 전해진다. 허황후는 김수로왕과 결혼 후 10명의 아들을 낳았는데 그 중 7명의 아들이 황후의 오빠를 따라 가야산 칠불봉으로 출가하였다. 황후는 아들들을 그리워하여 가야산을 찾았지만 산에 오를 수 없었고, 부처님께 아들들의 그림자만이라도 볼 수 있게 해달라고 정성껏 기도를 드렸다. 그러자 이 연못에 수행 중인 왕자들의 모습이 비쳤다고 한다.
‘칠불봉’이라는 이름은 “일곱 부처의 봉우리”라는 뜻으로 허황옥의 아들 일곱을 가리킨다.
