해설문

만대루는 휴식과 강학을 위한 공간이다. 서원에서 제사를 지내거나 행사를 할 때 개·폐회를 알리는 곳이기도 하고, 드물게 연회를 위한 공간으로 활용되기도 했다.

‘만대’라는 이름은 당나라 시인 두보(杜甫, 712~770)의 ‘백제성루(白帝城樓)’ 중 “푸른 절벽처럼 둘러쳐진 산수는 저녁 무렵 마주하기 좋으니[翠屛宜晩對]”라는 구절에서 따왔다. 실제로 저녁 무렵 만대루에서 오르면 병풍을 두른듯한 산과 낙동강의 절경을 즐길 수 있다.

만대루는 목재를 다듬지 않고 그대로 사용하고, 장식과 기교도 없이 꼭 필요한 요소만을 두어 건축했다. 휘어진 모습 그대로 서 있는 기둥들과 자연 그대로의 주춧돌, 커다란 통나무를 깎아 만든 계단 등은 건축과 자연이 어우러지는 한국 전통 건축의 빼어난 멋을 그대로 보여준다.

Mandaeru Pavilion

This pavilion serves as a place for lectures and leisure. During rituals and community occasions held in this academy, this pavilion was also used as a gathering point for opening or closing announcements. Occasionally, banquets were also held here.

Its name literally means "a pavilion for viewing in the evening." It comes from a phrase in a poem composed by the Tang Chinese poet Du Fu (712-770), which states that "the mountains and rivers, which surround us like a green cliff, are best viewed in the evening." As the poem relates, the evening view from the pavilion, overlooking both Byeongsan Mountain and the Nakdonggang River, is both poetic and panoramic.

A special feature of this pavilion is that its materials were kept as close as possible to their natural form and were only hewn in parts where it was structurally necessary. The wooden pillars, rock foundations, and wooden stairs all demonstrate the essential beauty of traditional Korean architecture, which seeks to harmonize with its natural surroundings.
