해설문

국문

이 능은 신라 제31대 신문왕(681~692 재위)을 모신 곳으로 알려져 있다. 신문왕은 문무왕의 맏아들로 부왕의 뜻을 이어받아 옛 백제와 고구려 백성을 융합하는 데 힘썼다. 국학*(國學)을 설립하여 인재를 양성하였고, 귀족들의 기반이 되던 녹읍**을 폐지하고 관료전***을 지급하였다. 지방을 통치하기 위하여 전국을 아홉 개의 주(州)로 나누고 중요한 거점 다섯 곳에 소경(小京)을 설치하였다. 신문왕이 죽은 후에는 낭산 동쪽에서 장사를 지냈다고 한다. 이 능은 낭산 남쪽 끝자락에 있다. 무덤 가장자리의 둘레돌은 벽돌 모양으로 다듬어 5단으로 쌓고 그 위에 덮개돌을 얹었다. 바깥쪽으로 사다리꼴 모양의 석재를 받쳐 놓았다. 정남쪽에 배치한 받침석의 윗부분에 ‘문(門)’자가 새겨져 있는데, 이곳이 무덤방으로 들어가는 널길 입구라는 것을 표시한 듯하다.

영문

This is known to be the tomb of King Sinmun (r. 681-692), the 31st ruler of the Silla dynasty (57 BCE–935 CE).

King Sinmun was the eldest son of King Munmu (r. 661-681). He worked to incorporate the people of the former Baekje and Goguryeo kingdoms after Silla had defeated them and gained most of their territory in 660 and 668, respectively. To foster talent, he established Silla’s first state educational institution. He also changed the system of land distribution to government officials, by only granting property rights of the land, not of the tenant farmers and agricultural goods produced on the land, as it used to be. This was because the previous system had let the aristocracy gain too much power. To improve the management of the various regions, he divided the kingdom into nine major administrative districts and established five minor capitals in key locations.

Encircling the base of the tomb mound are five layers of stone bricks with a layer of flat stones atop them. Trapezoidal stone buttresses are installed at regular intervals around the base. The stone platform at the front of the tomb is an entrance leading to the chamber inside the tomb mound.
