'''Yongjang Church, Uljin'''
+
'''Bukpyeong Catholic Church, Donghae'''

This traditional-style building was constructed circa 1936 as Yongjang Church. The history of this church goes back to 1907 when Haenggok Church, the first Protestant* church in Uljin, was established in Haenggok-ri Village about 10 km south. With the completion its new** worship hall in 1934, the influence of the church began to grow, which led to the construction of Yongjang Church.
+
Bukpyeong Catholic Church was built in 1959 by the priests from St Columbans Mission Society*. It is an important communal center of the religious life in the Donghae area.

The building faces northwest and stands on a slightly elevated ground compared to other buildings in the village, which provides a panoramic view of the surroundings. It features an open interior layout with a wooden floor and a wooden ceiling with earthen finish applied between the rafters.
+
Catholic Church was brought to the area in the 1930s by the believers moving here from Gyeonggi-do region. The first chapel was built in the area in 1940, and in 1958, the construction of this church began. Fr. Cornelius Quirke was invited as the church’s first provost. In 1959 at the time of completion, the complex consisted of a church building and a presbytery. The monastery and other buildings were added during later expansions and renovations. The bell installed in the church’s belltower was brought from France in 1960. Presently, only the church building is designated as National Registered Cultural Heritage.

In the church’s original layout, the lectern was located across the room from the current main entrance while the space inside was separated with a piece of fabric into the male and female sections, which also had their own entrances on either side of the building. Presently, the lectern is moved in the right end and the separation between the men and women removed.

The church is preserved in a relatively unchanged state which provides valuable information about the church architecture in the early 20th century.
+
Despite the renovations, many original parts of the buildings, such as the wooden window frames and the finish of the ceiling are well preserved. The exterior design of this church is nearly identical to several other churches built along the eastern coast of Gangwon-do Province, namely, Imdangdong Catholic Church (completed in 1955) in Gangneung, Seongnaedong Catholic Church (completed in 1957) in Samcheok, and Mukho Catholic Church (completed in 1957) in Donghae. All these churches were built in the 1950s by the foreign priests of St Columbans Mission Society and preserve an important part of the Church’s history in the area.

*It says on their homepage that they are 침례교회(Baptist). https://hanggook.icg21.com/

**On their homepage its says they had a 초가집 built as their first church in 1910. Although I can’t quite understand the difference between 교회 (as a building) and a 예배당 here.
