Remains of the Stone Balustrade of Hwangudan Altar

These are the remains of a stone balustrade that once surrounded Hwangudan Altar.

Hwangudan Altar was composed of a three-tiered circular stone foundation surrounded by a stone balustrade. Following the dismantlement of the altar during the construction of the Joseon Railway Hotel (today’s Westin Chosun Hotel) in 1913-1914, the stone balustrade was repurposed in the renovation of the arched brick gate which had stood between Hwangudan Altar and Hwanggungu Shrine. However, this balustrade was dismantled during repairs of the wall around the gate to restore its original design in 2019. The stones were then put in their current location for safekeeping.
