영수사 영산회괘불탱은 석가모니가 영취산에서 제자를 모아 놓고 말씀하시는 모습을 그린 영산회상도(靈山會上圖)이다. 이 괘불은 조선 효종 4년(1653) 7월에 명옥(明玉)·소읍(小揖)·현욱(玄旭)·법능(法能) 등 4명의 승려 화가들이 모시에 그렸는데, 밝은 채색과 부드럽고 아름다운 필치, 매끄러운 인물 표현이 특히 돋보인다.

석가모니 앞에 앉은 사리불*이 등장하는 그림으로는 가장 빠른 시기의 괘불**이며, 17세기 영산회상도의 대표적인 본보기라고 할 수 있다. 또한 조선 후기 영산회상도 중에서도 가장 위엄 있고 실감나게 표현된 것으로 그 가치가 높다.

이 괘불은 세로 813㎝, 가로 554㎝의 초대형 걸개용 괘불 탱화로, 석가 탄신일에만 공개되고 있다.

Hanging Painting of Yeongsusa Temple, Jincheon (The Vulture Peak Assembly)

Hanging banner paintings were displayed outdoors on special occasions such as the Buddha’s birthday, outdoor rites, and the funerals of eminent monks.

This painting was created in 1653 by four monk-painters, namely Myeongok, Soeup, Hyeonuk, and Beopneung. It depicts the scene of the Sakyamuni Buddha’s lecture at Vulture Peak in a realistic and grandiose style.

In the center of the painting, Sakyamuni Buddha is sitting on a lotus pedestal. Around him are 20 bodhisattvas, 16 arhats, the four guardian kings, guardian deities, heavenly beings, and a crowd of the Buddha’s followers. The figure sitting in front of the Buddha is Sariputra, who is regarded as the wisest of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha.

This painting measures 5.5 m in width and 8.1 m in length. Currently, the painting is open to the public only on the Buddha’s birthday, which is the eighth day of the fourth lunar month.

영문 해설 내용

괘불은 사찰에서 큰 법회나 의식을 행할 때 야외에 걸어놓고 예배를 드리는 데 쓰였다.

이 괘불은 1653년에 명옥, 소읍, 현욱, 법능 등 4명의 승려 화가들이 그린 것으로, 석가모니가 영취산에서 설법하는 모습을 위엄있고 실감나게 묘사하였다.

그림 중앙에는 석가모니가 연화대좌 위에 앉아 있고, 그 주위를 20대 보살, 16나한, 사천왕, 팔부중과 신장, 성중 등이 에워싸고 있다. 특히 석가모니 앞에 앉아 있는 인물은 석가모니의 십대제자 중 가장 지혜로운 사람으로 여겨지는 사리불이다.

이 그림은 가로 5.5m, 세로 8.1m로, 석가탄신일에만 공개되고 있다.
