해설문

국문

어서각은 임금이 친히 쓴 글씨를 보관하는 건물이다. 이 건물은 1799년(정조23)에 처음 지었으며 1925년에 고쳐지었다. 이 건물에서 보관하고 있는 글씨는 영조가 장현경(1730∼1805)에게 하사한 것이다. 영조는 1763년(영조 39) 동짓날 조회에서 조정대신들에게 흰죽과 꿩고기를 내리고 함께 즐겼다. 이에 감복한 장현경이 영조에게 시를 지어 올리니 영조가 화답하여 친필로 시를 써주었다. 영조가 쓴 시의 내용은 다음과 같다. ‘칠순이 된 계미년 동짓날에 음식을 내렸도다. 파루의 종이 반을 알릴 때 군신이 같이 먹노라. 옛적 동한에 콩죽이 성하였는데 지금 이 집안에 가히 태평성대를 보겠구나.’ 장현경은 이글을 가지고 고향으로 돌아가 어서각을 짓고 이곳에 칠필 시를 보관 하였다. 임금의 글씨를 보물처럼 여김과 동시에 후손들에게 본보기로 삼으려는 조선 후기의 사회상을 보여준다.

영문

Royal Calligraphy Pavilion

This pavilion was built in 1799 to house calligraphy written and conferred by King Yeongjo (r. 1724-1776) to Jang Hyeon-gyeong (1730-1805), a civil official of the Joseon period (1392-1910).

In 1763, on the morning of the Winter Solstice, the king held a banquet for the officials, in which they were served rice porridge and a pheasant dish. Impressed by the king’s generosity, Jang Hyeon-gyeong expressed his gratitude with a poem he presented to the king, and the king answered with another poem written by himself. Later, Jang brought the king’s poem to his hometown and built this pavilion to house the royal calligraphy.
