  • Beopjusa Temple and Surroundings in Songnisan Mountain

2019

The Songnisan Mountain area is a scenic site which harmonizes with the year-round beautiful landscape as well as 10 Buddhist temples, such as Beopjusa Temple, Bokcheonam Hermitage, and Talgoram Hermitage. Beopjusa Temple and its surrounding area of 18.59 sq. km, including Songnisan Mountain's highest peaks, Cheonwangbong (1,057 m above sea level) and Gwaneumbong (982 m above sea level), were designated as Scenic Site No. 61 in 2009.

The original name of Songnisan Mountain was Gubongsan Mountain because of its nine highest peaks. But during the Unified Silla period (668-935), it was changed to its current name meaning "a mountain far from the secular world." It has long been considered a sacred mountain and is famous for its cherry blossoms in spring, green pine trees in summer, autumn foliage in fall, and snowy landscape in winter.

Beopjusa Temple, the representative temple of Songnisan Mountain, was originally established in 553. Over a few centuries, it was renovated and expanded by many of Korea's most renowned monks. But during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598, the entire temple was burned to the ground along with its associated hermitages. Its reconstruction began in 1624. Today, the temple is home to three national treasures, 13 treasures, one natural monument, and 24 provincial cultural heritages, such as the only extant wooden pagoda in Korea (National Treasure No. 55), a twin lion stone lantern (National Treasure No. 5), a stone lotus basin (National Treasure No. 64), a stone lantern with reliefs of the Four Guardian Kings (Treasure No. 15), and Daeungbojeon Hall (Treasure No. 915).

As the Beopjusa Temple area embodies the asceticism and daily life of Buddhist monks that is characteristics of a mountain temple, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 together with six other temples under the name "Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea."

Beopjusa Temple is said to have been established in 553 by the Buddhist monk Uisin. In 776, the temple underwent a large-scale expansion overseen by the monk Jinpyo and continued to grow throughout the Goryeo period (918-1392). It burnt down in the Japanese invasion of 1597, was rebuilt in 1624 by the monks Samyeong and Baekam, and has since undergone several renovations and expansions.

This Buddhist temple is home to numerous designated cultural heritages, including Korea’s only extant wooden pagoda Palsangjeon (National Treasure), a twin lion stone lantern (National Treasure), a stone lotus basin (National Treasure), a stone lantern with reliefs of the Four Guardian Kings (Treasure), and Daeungbojeon Hall (Treasure). As Beopjusa Temple embodies the traditional asceticism and monastic lifestyle that are characteristic of a mountain temple (sansa), it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018 together with six other temples under the name “Sansa, Buddhist Mountain Monasteries in Korea.”

Songnisan Mountain, where Beopjusa Temple is located, is a renowned scenic site known for its beautiful seasonal landscapes. The name Songnisan means “Mountain Far from the Secular World” and was used since the Unified Silla period (668-935). Prior to that, the mountain had been known as Gubongsan, meaning “Mountain of the Nine Peaks,” the highest of which is Cheonwangbong Peak (1,057 m above sea level). Apart from Beopjusa Temple, Songnisan Mountain is home to nine other traditional Buddhist temples.
