해설문

국문

북평성당은 1958년 지어지기 시작하여 1959년 완공되었으며, 초대 주임신부로 구 고르넬리오(Cornelius Quirke) 신부가 부임하였다. 최초로 본당과 사제관이 지어졌으며, 이후 증축·보수 과정에서 수녀원 등 여러 건물이 세워졌다. 현재는 본당 건물만 문화재로 지정되었다.

북평성당은 인근에 위치한 강릉 임당동성당(1955년), 삼척 성내동성당(1957년), 동해 묵호성당(1957년)과 거의 동일한 건축형태를 가지고 있다. 이는 1950년대 영동지역에서 활동한 콜롬반회 외국인 신부들에 의해 지어졌기 때문이다. 이중 북평성당은 본당 이외에도 사제관 등 시설이 함께 남아 있고, 일부 보수의 흔적은 있지만 본당에 사용된 목재 창틀과 내부 천장 마감재 등은 건립 당시의 원형을 고스란히 유지하고 있어 높은 가치를 가진다. 종탑에 설치된 종은 1960년 프랑스에서 들여온 것이다.

북평성당은 묵호성당과 함께 동해지역 천주교 신앙의 산실이며, 단순한 건축물로의 의미를 넘어 한국전쟁 이후 동해 지역사람들에게 신앙생활과 공동체의 쉼터로써 역할을 해온 의미있는 공간이라고 할 수 있다.

Bukpyeong Catholic Church, Donghae

Bukpyeong Catholic Church was built in 1959 by foreign priests from the Missionary Society of St. Columban. It is an important communal center of religious life in the Donghae area.

The Catholic Church was brought to Donghae in the 1930s when believers from Gyeonggi-do Province settled in the area. The first chapel was built in 1940, and construction of the current church building began in 1958. Fr. Cornelius Quirke was invited as the church’s first provost. At the time of its completion in 1959, the complex consisted of a church building and a presbytery. A monastery and other buildings were added during later expansions and renovations. The bell installed in the church’s bell tower was brought from France in 1960. Currently, only the church building is registered as National Registered Cultural Heritage.

Despite the renovations, many original parts of the buildings, such as the wooden window frames and the finish of the ceiling, are well preserved. The exterior design of this church is nearly identical to several other churches built along the eastern coast of Gangwon-do Province in the 1950s by the Missionary Society of St. Columban, including Imdangdong Catholic Church in Gangneung (completed in 1955), Seongnaedong Catholic Church in Samcheok (completed in 1957), and Mukho Catholic Church in Donghae (completed in 1957). Together, these churches preserve an important part of the Church’s regional history.

영문 해설 내용

북평성당은 골롬반회 신부들에 의해 1959년에 지어졌으며, 동해 지역사람들에게 신앙생활과 공동체의 쉼터로써 역할을 해온 의미있는 공간이다.

동해 지역은 1930년대 경기도에서 이주해 온 천주교인들이 정착하면서 천주교가 전래되었다. 1940년에 공소가 세워졌다가 1958년에 성당 신축이 시작되었으며, 초대 주임신부로 구 고르넬리오(Cornelius Quirke) 신부가 부임하였다. 신축 당시에는 본당과 사제관이 지어졌고, 이후 증축·보수 과정에서 수녀원 등 여러 건물이 세워졌다. 종탑에 설치된 종은 1960년 프랑스에서 들여온 것이다. 현재는 본당 건물만 국가등록문화재로 등록되었다.
