A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. Although not all pagodas contain the true remains, they are nonetheless worshiped as sacred places that enshrine the Buddha.

This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been built in the mid- to late 9th century, during the Unified Silla period (676-935). It is located northwest of the summit of Maseoksan Mountain. Although little is known about the temple that once stood here, some foundation stones from its building site remain nearby. Following an investigation in 1981, the pagoda was repaired into its present form by supplementing the remaining original components with new stone materials.

Standing 5 m tall, the pagoda consists of a single-tier base, three sets of body and roof stones, and part of a decorative top. In most stone pagodas with a single-tier base, pillar-shaped carvings are found both at the corners and in the center of the base. In this pagoda, however, such carvings appear only at the corners. In terms of its overall proportions and style, the pagoda shows a transitional stage from Silla stone pagodas to those of the Goryeo period (918-1392).

불탑은 부처의 유골을 모신 상징적인 조형물이다. 모든 탑이 진신사리를 모신 것은 아니지만, 부처를 모신 신성한 곳으로 여겨 신앙의 대상이 된다.

이 삼층석탑은 통일신라시대인 9세기 중후반에 만들어진 것으로 추정된다. 마석산 정상부 북서쪽에 자리하고 있으며, 이곳에 있던 사찰에 대해서는 알려진 바가 없으나 주변에 건물지의 초석 일부가 남아있다. 석탑은 1981년에 조사를 거친 뒤, 남아있던 부재에 새 석재를 보충하여 지금의 모습으로 보수되었다.

높이 5m의 이 석탑은 단층 기단, 3층의 몸돌과 지붕돌, 머리장식 일부로 이루어져 있다. 일반적으로 단층 기단 석탑은 기단의 모서리와 가운데에 기둥 모양을 새기지만, 이 석탑은 모서리에만 기둥 모양을 새긴 것이 특징이다. 전체적인 비례와 양식으로 보아, 신라 석탑에서 고려 석탑으로 이어지는 과도기적 변화를 보여준다.
