The Gwangju Biennale’s Origins in the Democratization Movement
Narrative
The Gwangju Biennale is a renowned international contemporary art biennale that first began in 1995. The 15th biennale, entitled “PANSORI: A Soundscape of the 21st Century,” was held in 2024. The biennale was established to elevate Gwangju’s cultural and artistic traditions as well as its spirit of democracy in Gwangju following the May 18 Democratization Movement. The biennale’s events have been hosted at various venues throughout the city, especially centered around Jungoe Park Cultural and Art Belt.
