The May 18 Democratic Uprising: Witness and Remembrance

Story

As the site of the May 18 Democratic Uprising in 1980, Gwangju is home to many buildings and other physical sites that served as venues of the events of the uprising. To this day, many of the buildings remain standing as witnesses to those events, still scarred with traces of the violence that took place. These buildings now serve as places of remembrance for the people who lost their lives and serve as repositories for the documentary heritage that remains. Some of these places have undergone renovation and revitalization to serve as spaces to help promote the future of Gwangju.
The following episodes will take a closer look at the venues of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and how they serve as places of witness and rememberance, as well as looking at other spaces of remembrance and documentation.
The venues explored here include Chonnam National University, the Jeonil Building, and the Former Jeollanam-do Provincial Office, as well as the May 18 Democratic Uprising Archives.
