Ullim-dong Art Valley: A Street Where Art Resides

Narrative

Ullim-dong Art Valley is a cultural district nestled along Uijae-ro Road at the foot of Mudeungsan Mountain in Gwangju. The road is named after Heo Baek-ryeon (1891–1977), a renowned artist from Jindo, and reflects the artistic spirit that defines the area.

Stretching approximately 3 kilometers from Baegopeundari Bridge to the entrance of Jeungsimsa Temple, the valley is lined with art museums and creative studios showcasing a wide range of artistic genres, including contemporary art and traditional Korean painting. Notable venues include the Woo Jaeghil Art Museum, which highlights the work of Woo Jaeghil (1942– ), as well as the G&Y Museum of Art, De Young Art Museum, and Mudeung Museum of Contemporary Art, all of which support local artists. The Gwangju Traditional Culture Center is also located in this area, offering an environment where contemporary art and traditional culture coexist. Nearby, the historic Jeungsimsa Temple adds a dimension of spiritual culture to the artistic landscape.
