Namgwangju Market: Where Roads, Lives, and History Meet

Narrative

Namgwangju Market is one of the traditional markets of Gwangju. It emerged following the opening of Namgwangju Station in 1975 and is located at a key transportation junction where Nammun-daero Road and Pilmun-daero Road meet. From early morning, merchants and residents have gathered here, and within the market, the Rice Soup Street and the Raw Fish Street have developed, shaping the everyday food culture of the area.

The market is also closely connected to the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980. At that time, Gwangju jumeokbap (rice ball) was prepared and provided at Namgwangju Market for the civilian militias, an act remembered as a symbol of solidarity and community spirit in times of crisis. In this way, Namgwangju Market embodies layers of historical memory and everyday food culture, holding within it the passage of time in Gwangju.
