Zainichi Collector of Minjung Art and More: Ha Jung-woong
Narrative
Ha Jung-woong (1939- ) is a second-generation Korean-Japanese businessman who grew up in Akita Prefecture, Japan. After achieving success as businessman, he began collecting art, beginning with the works of Korean artists in Japan, before expanding his collection to renowned Korean artists based in Korea, as well as foreign artists. Among his collection are the woodcut prints of Hong Seong-dam (1955-), which preserve the legacy of the May 18 Democratic Uprising as works of Minjung art. From 1993 to 2014, Ha Jung-woong generously donated over 2,500 artworks from his extensive collection to the Gwangju Museum of Art. His contribution not only enriched the museum’s offerings but also led to the establishment of an annex museum, the Ha Jung-woong Museum of Art. Opened in 2017, this dedicated space to commemorate Ha Jung-woong’s noble spirit of contribution to Gwangju is housed in the former provincial governor’s residence, build in 1982.
