Korea in the Early Twentieth Century as Seen by Western Missionaries in Gwangju

Narrative

Among the foreign missionaries who lived in Gwangju, several wrote of their experiences, which provide a glimpse into life in Gwangju, and Korea more broadly, at the time. Ella Graham (1889-1930) wrote Two Decades in the Hermit Kingdom (unpublished, 1907-1927). Paul Sacket Crane (1989-1919) wrote The Women of Korea (1918). Anabel Major Nisbet (1869-1920) wrote Day In and Day Out in Korea (1919). Lois Hawks Swinehart (1869-1971) wrote Jane in the Orient (1924), Sarangie: A Child of Chosen (1926), Korea Calls!: A Story of the Eastern Mission Field (1929), and a biography of her fellow missionary, the esteemed nurse Elisabeth J. Shepping (1880-1934) (1937). And Maria Dodson (1998-1972) wrote Half a Lifetime in Korea (1952). In particular, The Women of Korea and Sarangie: A Child of Chosen provide insight into the lives of girls and women at the time.
