Overlooking Gwangju: Mudeungsan Mountain

Story

  • Mudeungsan Mountain could be considered Gwangju's most prominent natural landmark, with an elevation of 1,187 m. Spanning the city's Buk-gu District along with the neightboring counties of Hwasun and Damyang, the mountain is home to Mudeungsan National part, which has an area of roughly 75 km2. The mountain's name is said to originate from the ancient name of Gwangju, which was Mudeul or Mudol.
  • Mudeungsan Mountain is home to a variety of natural and cultural heritage. The episodes in this story will explore that heritage, looking at the mountain's natural scenic sites, cultural spaces such as Buddhist temples and the pavilions of Confucian literati, traditional kiln sites, and various folk practices related to the mountain.
