A columnar joint is a geological structure that forms as volcanic rock cools, contracts, and cracks, resulting in the formation of a regular array of multi-sided columns. The columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain formed in the Cretaceous period. Among the columnar joints, Seoseokdae Rock and Ipseokdae Rock are known to be the tallest in all of South Korea. In recognition of their geological significance and their scenic beauty, the columnar joints of Mudeungsan Mountain were designated as a Scenic Site in 2005.
