Modern History as Seen Through Gwangju's Landmarks

Story

  • Gwangju is home to many historic buildings built in the first part of the 20th century that have been registered as modern cultural heritages. This story looks at the modern history of Gwangju from the perspective of these historic buildings by examining what the buildings say about the social changes of that time. The buildings date from 1911 to 1957, spanning the entire Japanese colonial period (1910-1945) and the Korean War (1950-1953).
  • In particular, the episodes look at the influence of Western missionaries in the early colonial period, the modernization of administration and education in the late colonial period, the growth of Christianity in the mid-20th century, and the boom for higher education in the 1950s.
