Understanding Buddhist Art through Gwangju’s Masterpieces 》Gwangju's Pagodas and Stupas - Stone Structures that Stood the Test of Time
Story
- Gwangju is home to a number of Buddhist heritage objects made of stone, which have withstood the test of time.
- The earliest stone structures date to the Unified Silla period (676-935). These include the three-story stone pagoda at Jeungsimsa Temple and the five-story stone pagoda in Jisan-dong, which is known to be the former site of Baekcheonsa Temple.
- Moving on to the Goryeo period (918-1392), there is the five-story stone pagodas in Sinnyong-dong and Seonggeosa Temple Site, the stupa of Wonhyosa Temple, and the stone lantern with inscription, which was originally located at the site of Daehwangsa Temple and is now kept at the Asia Culture Center.
- Among the structure, the five-story stone pagodas in Sinnyong-dong and Seonggeosa Temple Site were found with remaining reliquaries, which are now kept at the Gyeongju National Museum.
