Gwangju Bus 419: The Road Along the Memory of Democracy

Gwangju Bus 419 was numbered in commemoration of the spirit of the April 19 Revolution of 1960. While the movement spread nationwide, in Gwangju it was led largely by high school students, with students of Gwangju High School playing a central role. The route passes Gwangju High School and continues to the April 19 Revolution Memorial Hall, following sites where memories of the democratic movement remain. It then extends into everyday urban spaces, passing the National Asian Culture Center, the Gwangju Biennale Exhibition Hall, and Daein Market, before connecting to Salesian High School and Chosun University. Along paths of education, culture, and daily life, Bus 419 weaves the memory of democracy into the present-day city.
