 신해년(辛亥年)에 호남 진산군에서 일어났기 때문에 진산사건(珍山事件)이라고도 하고 신해사옥(辛亥邪獄), 신해옥사(辛亥獄事), 호남옥사(湖南獄事)라고도 부른다. 전라도 진산군의 선비 윤지충, 권상연(윤지충의 외제)이 윤지충의 모친상을 당하여 신주를 불사르고 천주교식으로 제례(祭禮)를 지냈다는 소문이 중앙에 들어오자 조정에서는 진산군수 신사원(申史源)을 시켜 두 사람을 체포하여 심문하고 그들이 사회 도덕을 문란하게 하고 무부무군(無父無君)의 사상을 신봉하였다는 죄명을 씌워 사형에 처했다. 정조는 이 사건을 이 정도에서 끝내고 관대한 정책을 써서 가톨릭교의 교주로 지목받은 권일신을 유배시키는 것으로 그치고 더 이상 천주교도에 대한 박해를 확대시키지 않았다.
