Dr Pankaj Mohan is Professor and Head of the Faculty of International Korean Studies at the Academy of Korean Studies, Seongnam City, Korea. He studied East Asian languages and history, initially at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and subsequently at Seoul National University, Peking University, Beijing and the Australian National University, Canberra where he received his Ph.D. degree in East Asian studies. Prior to joining the Academy of Korean Studies, Professor Mohan taught Korean and East Asian studies for about two decades at the Australian National University, the University of Sydney and the University of Copenhagen.
Professor Mohan's academic research and writing crosses a number of disciplines, including history, religious studies and area studies; and examines themes as varied as early Korean history, cultural interactions amongst East Asian countries, and comparative history of nationalism in Asia. He authored and translated several books on Korean history, and has published numerous research papers and book-chapters in reputed international publications. Some of his recent works include: "Tagore’s Influence of Pan-Asian Solidarity and its Influence in East Asia" (Kyoto, 2010); "Japanese Studies on Early Silla Buddhism during the Colonial Period" (Seoul, 2010); "Spread and Accommodation of Buddhism in Dae Gaya" (Kyemyung University, 2009); "Myth of the ‘Nation-Protecting ‘Tradition of Korean Buddhism: A Critique" (Seoul, 2008); "The Buddhist Transformation of Korean Kingship" (Kathmandu, 2008); "Cakravartin and Relic-Cult in Early Silla: Chinese Antecedents and Korean Adaptations", (Seoul, 2007); "The Roles of Monks Won'gwang and Chajang in the Formation of Early Silla Buddhism" (Princeton, 2007)
Professor Mohan is chief editor of "Korean-Indian Culture", and he is also on the Editorial Advisory Board of several journals, including "Review of Korean Studies", "Journal of Northeast Asian History" "International Journal of Buddhist Thought and Culture" "Studies in Silla History" and "Asian Culture". In recognition of his contribution to Korean studies he was granted honorary citizenship by the Seoul Metropolitan Government.
