Since its first organization in 2012, the Department of Linguistics at the University of the Philippines-Diliman has been successful in organizing the Philippine Korean Studies Symposium (PKSS). It has become a venue for Filipino scholars to acquire new knowledge on the Korean society, present their cutting-edge research, interact with renowned Korean Studies scholars from all over the world, and develop Korean programs in their respective institution.

As PKSS was going to mark its fifth year in 2016, the university specially organized its first ever Korean Studies Workshop for Academicians in the Philippines (“K-SWAP”). The purpose of the K-SWAP is to deepen the Filipino academicians’ awareness, understanding and knowledge of Korea, and ultimately help them develop Korean Studies curriculum and produce comparative research in their institution.

The workshop was operated in three parts.
- Lectures: Several panels of leading academics and practitioners from the Philippines, Korea and elsewhere addressed a broad variety of issues in the latest development of Korean Studies.
- Open Forum: As soon as the lecture was done, open forum followed in order for participants to inquire further and examine deeper the field that was discussed.
- Consultation: Mentorship by leading academics was provided in order to guide participants to reach practical and realistic goal as a researcher in Korean Studies field
