예문관 봉교 이소 등이 성종의 불교 배척 의지를 본받기를 아뢰다

○藝文館奉敎李宵等啓: "臣等雖無言責, 久侍經幄, 歷知大行大王深斥佛敎。 祝壽之齋, 自祖宗朝行之已久, 而罷之; 度僧之法, 載在大典而亦罷之。 至於經筵嘗曰: ‘予之不好佛, 爾等咸知。’ 臣等追念聖敎, 洋洋在耳。 嗣王亦豈不知? 今者賓天未幾, 小大皇皇, 擗踊奔走之時, 撞鍾擊鼓, 飯佛齋僧, 題疏緘曰: ‘朝鮮國王’云云, 非徒臣民缺望, 深恐在天之靈, 亦必有所憾也。 孔子曰: ‘三年無改於父之道, 可謂孝矣。’ 未審此擧, 可謂孝乎? 況當嗣服之初, 臺諫、侍從之言, 一切拒之, 首擧非禮之事, 率一國以左道, 非所以自貽哲命之道。 伏望勉從輿望, 以示惟新之化。" 不從。

예문관 봉교(奉敎) 이소(李宵) 등이 아뢰기를, "신 등은 비록 언책(言責)은 없으나, 경악(經幄)에서 오래 모시었으므로, 대행 대왕께서 불교를 매우 배척하신 것을 잘 알고 있습니다. 축수재(祝壽齋)는 조종조로부터 행한 지 이미 오래였는데도 그것을 파하시고, 도승(度僧)의 법이 《대전(大典)》에 실려 있는데도 또한 파하시고, 경연(經筵)에서 일찍이 말씀하시기를 ‘내가 불교를 좋아하지 않음은 그대들이 다 아는 바이다.’ 하셨으니, 신 등이 성교(聖敎)를 추억하오매, 양양(洋洋)히 귀에 남아 있거니와, 사왕(嗣王)께서 또한 어찌 모르시오리까. 이제 승하하신지 얼마 안 되어, 모두가 어쩔 줄 몰라 애통하고 분주한 이때에 종을 치고 북을 두드리며 절에 재를 지내며 소문 겉봉에 ‘조선 국왕…’ 이라고 쓴다면, 신민이 실망할 뿐만 아니라, 하늘에 계신 혼령[靈]이 또한 불쾌하실까 깊이 염려됩니다. 공자가 ‘3년 동안 아버지의 법도를 고치지 않아야 효도라 할 수 있다.’ 하였는데, 이 일을 효도라 할 수 있으리까. 하물며 나라를 이어받은 처음에, 대간(臺諫)과 시종(侍從)의 말을 일체 거절하고, 맨 먼저 예도에 맞지 않는 일을 거행하여 온 나라를 좌도(左道)로 이끄는 것은 처음부터 착함을 익혀서 지혜롭게 한다는 도리에 어긋납니다. 엎드려 바라옵건대, 힘써 여러 사람들의 바라는 바를 좇으시어, 새로운 교화(敎化)를 보이소서." 하였으나, 듣지 않았다.	Education Administrator of the Office of Royal Degrees, Yi So , and others said: “We have not spoken up. From the long time we spent [with the late king] at royal lectures, we know full well that he shunned Buddhism. He put an end to the Ritual for Long Life although it had been held since the beginning of the dynasty. He [also] abolished the law for certifying Buddhist monks even though it is in the Great Treatise (Gyeongguk daejeon). [Furthermore], he said at the royal lectures: ‘You know I dislike Buddhism.’ When remembering his teachings, it is as if we still hear his words ringing in our ears. How can the next king be unaware of this? Little time has passed since the death [of the king] and everyone is at a loss. If, at such a time of grief, bells and drums are played, and food is offered to the Buddha and the monks, and the frontispiece of the memorial reads “King of Joseon, etc.,” not only will the officials be disappointed, but we are deeply concerned that the spirit in heaven will also be displeased. Confucius said: ‘If for three years he does not alter from the way of his father, he may be called filial.’ Can this be considered filial devotion? Rejecting the words of the Censorate and the Royal Chamberlain, let alone [doing this] when [when you] first come to power? You will lead the country down an improper path with an unpropitious act at the very outset; this is out of line with your duty to be kind and wise from the beginning. As we prostrate ourselves, we beg of you: Please follow the wishes of the people urging you. Please make a fresh start.” The crown prince did not listen.
