Swallows: Female swallows and male ones fly together. They carry mud in mouth to build a nest and then give birth to fledglings. They hold insects in mouth to feed the young. Sounding "GOO GOO," they enjoy each other. They come on the third day of the third month and leave in the ninth month.


52. 杜鵑 : 蜀帝之魂化爲寃鳥其名曰杜鵑春山月白長啼不如歸

Cuckoo: The emperor's spirit of Shu became a grieving bird. Its name is Cuckoo. On spring mountain with full moon it wails "Pulyŏgui(lit. It's not as good as returning,)."

Dragon: Among three hundreds of scaled animals the dragon is the chief. It gets clouds and then goes with rain. When seen, it is in the field. When flying, it is in the sky. The change of [its movement] is not predictable.


55. 麟 : 麟之爲物一角五趾不畜於家不恒有於天下待聖人而出

[Female] Unicorn: The way the unicorn is a being is that it has one horn and five feet. It is not raised by households. It is not always under heaven. Waiting for sages, it comes out [if it sees sages].

Scaled creatures are three hundreds and the dragons are their chiefs. They get clouds and lead the conduct of rain. If they are seen, then it is in the fields; if they fly then it is in the heaven. Their transformations are unpredictable.


55. 麟 : 麟之爲物一角五趾不畜於家不恒有於天下待聖人而出

The way unicorns are things consist in having one horn and five toes. They are not not raised by households. They are not permanently under the heaven, wait sages and [then] come out.


1: 呴呴 (kugu, 'gugu'), approximation of an onomatopeia that is attributed to certain birds.

2: 社日 (Sa-il), the fifth day after the spring solstice.

3: 蜀 (Chinese: Shu), a kingdom located in the far South-West of China that was established in 221. It was annexed by the Wei kingdom in 265, which marked the start of the Jin dynasty and the end of the period of the Chinese Three Kingdoms.

4: 蟲 (chung), sometimes used for insects, sometimes used more widely for animals (notably including tigers like in 水滸傳 (Shuihuzhuan, 16th century)).

5: 角角 (kakkak), approximation of an onomatopeia that is attributed to pheasants.

1) Sail (社日) is the fifth day after the Beginning of Spring (立春) which is usually around February 4th of the solar calendar.

2) 不如歸 can be an onomatopoeia but also literally means “better not to return.”

  • 華蟲 has a meaning of a pheasant.

54. Dragon: Dragons become the king among the three hundred things that have scales. They have clouds and control rains. When they are seen, then they are in the fields. When they fly, they are in the sky. The transformation cannot be anticipated.

55. Unicorn (rin): A unicorn (rin) is a thing which has a horn and five toes. It cannot be raised in the household. It is not always under the heaven. It waits for a sage and comes out.
